CHILD AND ADOLESCENT COACHING
ABOUT THIS COURSE
This Level 5 accredited course is specifically designed for accredited/registered coaches, counsellors and therapists. There is a globally growing need for trained professionals to support children and adolescents, both through intervention and by providing appropriate coaching tools and skills to help reduce and prevent mental health challenges.
On successful completion of this course, you will be trained and qualified to work as a coach supporting children (4-11 years old) and adolescents (11-18 years old) both inside and outside of a school setting. As part of your training, you will learn about:
‘Coaching Basics’ – core qualities, skills and tools needed to safely and effectively coach children and adolescents.
‘Coaching Ethics’ – the difference between counselling, mentoring and coaching; when coaching is and isn’t appropriate; how to refer clients to other support services when coaching is not appropriate and the importance of child protection, safeguarding and confidentiality.
The developing brain – how it might impact the performance, mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.
How to deliver ‘The Other Subject’ – a collection of ground-breaking and accredited coaching programs that help children and adolescents thrive physically, mentally, emotionally and academically.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Accredited/Certified (Diploma level) counsellors, therapists and coaches who would like to work as a professional coach supporting children and adolescents both within and outside of a school setting. (The understanding of general coaching techniques is assumed. Additional coaching training is available.)

Training & course Work
The course involves approximately 135 hours of work over 6-12 months. Course requirements are as follows:
Completion of self-study workbooks with consolidation exercises at the end of each module.
Child and Adolescent Coaching – Attended Training – this 2 x 2-day training course (held in London or neighbouring counties and also European venues) includes ‘Coaching Basics’, ‘Coaching Ethics’, an understanding of the developing brain and how to deliver The Other Subject. Two days of this training focus on coaching children and the other two days focus on coaching adolescents.
- Mentoring sessions – six one-to-one sessions (via Skype/Zoom) with an NMC appointed mentor. Three of these sessions will focus on coaching children and three on coaching adolescents.
- Coaching assessments – there are two assessments – one on coaching children and one on coaching adolescents. All assessments will take place (via Skype/Zoom) with an NMC appointed assessor.
- Webinars – there are four coaching webinars – two webinars are on coaching children and the other two webinars are on coaching adolescents (including access to recordings if you are unable to attend). Students will also have access to NMC’s monthly coaching development live webinars and general (adult) coaching webinars.
- Coaching hours – students need to complete and log a minimum of 40 hours coaching clients. At least 20 hours must be spent coaching children and the remaining 20 hours must be spent coaching adolescents.
- Reflective notes – demonstrating learning with respect to:
- Child and Adolescent Coaching Training (Note: a structure for these notes will be provided after this 2-day training)
- Mentoring sessions
- Reflective essays – Submit 2 essays of 1000-2500 words each from a set list of suggested essay topics which will be provided by NMC. One must focus on coaching children and one must focus on coaching adolescents.
- Assignment – Submit one 4000-6000-word assignment focussing on child and/or adolescent coaching. Students choose from a list of assignment questions provided by NMC.
- Evidence Portfolio – students will be required to upkeep and submit a portfolio containing evidence of the coursework carried out (blank EP provided).
THE OTHER SUBJECT
A core component of this course is training to deliver a collection of ground-breaking and accredited coaching programs that help children and adolescents thrive physically, mentally, emotionally and academically (The OS Programs). The programs have been primarily created for delivery in schools but can also be delivered outside of schools. After completing The OS Programs, participants receive a formal certificate to acknowledge the valuable coaching and life-skills that they have learnt and acquired. They may then use this to enhance and strengthen their personal profile/CV.
Each program uses tried and tested coaching tools and techniques. These tools and techniques are also blended with neuroscience, cognitive behavioural science, positive psychology, mindfulness and resilience-based methodologies to make them truly integrative and impactful programs.
There are eight programs carefully crafted for every year of school from Reception (4-5 years old) to Year 13 (17-18 years old). Each program is based on one of the following colour-coded modules, representing a key area for maturation and development in children and young people:

All of the programs are flexible and adaptable. They can be used as a lesson, workshop, talk or assembly – alternatively they can be used to support children or adolescents one-to-one or in small groups inside or outside of a school setting. They can also be shortened and delivered in one session or expanded and delivered over a few weeks when there is the time to do this.
